Redcoats.io is a browser based first person shooter about the age of muskets and sail, where you join a side, pick a role like musketeer or cavalryman, and fight for forts on a map that holds up to a thousand players. It is free to play in your browser, with no download and nothing to install.
What sets it apart is the scale. Battles run in one connected world with as many as 1,000 concurrent players on a single map, and the developer Yp3d calls it the largest 3D web multiplayer FPS ever made. You are not the hero of this story. You are one soldier in a firing line, and a firing line only works when a few dozen people stand in it together.
How the Battles Play Out
Every war is decided by forts. They sit at the key positions on the map, and your side has to attack, defend and hold them to win the war. Kills help your team, but they are not the goal, which is a nice change from the usual scoreboard chasing. A battle can pull in a huge crowd of players at once, with infantry pushing on foot, cavalry riding around the edges and cannons thumping away from the back. It feels like a proper war rather than a small arena match.
Four Roles With Very Different Jobs
You choose a role when you spawn, and each one plays like its own little game.
- A Musketeer carries a flintlock musket and a bayonet, and is at their best in a group that fires in lines.
- A Cavalryman rides a horse, covers ground fast and is built for flanking and running down stragglers.
- A Cannoneer works the field cannons, firing cannonballs across the map or switching to grapeshot when enemies get close.
- A Sailor crews the warships, and a ship only works with a crew. One player steers while others man the guns.
The roles are not cosmetic. Ride a horse straight at a firing line and you become a very large target, and a cannon sitting out in the open is a cannon about to be captured. Staying near teammates is the trick, and it is also where the game gets fun.
Taking a Fort Is a Group Effort
Forts do not fall to one player. Groups push the walls together, cavalry sweeps wide to cut off defenders, and cannons soften the position before anyone steps into the open. Coastal forts can also be pounded from the water by a crewed warship, which is a strange thing to watch working inside a browser tab.
New players should start as a musketeer, follow the largest group they can find and fire at whatever that group fires at. It sounds too simple, but the slow rhythm of a line reloading together is exactly what the game is built around.
Controls and How to Join a Battle
Open the game, pick a side and you spawn on the battlefield in seconds. The controls are standard shooter fare with a few extras:
- WASD to move and the mouse to aim.
- Left click to shoot.
- 1 to 5 to change weapons.
- Space to jump and C to crouch.
- Shift to zoom your aim.
- F to interact, which covers mounting a horse, boarding a ship and using a cannon.
- M to open the map.
It runs on WebGL2 and feels best in Chrome, Edge or Brave, though other modern browsers should work too. There is nothing to install and no launcher to babysit, and the game launched in 2026 from Yp3d, an independent developer based in the UK.
