WorldGuessr is a geography guessing game that drops you into a random Street View spot somewhere on the planet and asks you to pin the location on a map. The closer your pin lands, the more points you score. It runs free in the browser, with no download, and solo rounds need no account at all.

A round starts with a view and nothing else. No country label, no city name, just a road, a field, or some hallway in a museum. I usually spend the first seconds doing a slow spin to check the sun and the traffic side, because those two things alone can cut a continent off the list. Signs are the real gold though. Language on a shop front, the shape of a plate, the color of a road marking, even the plants at the edge of the frame. It gets a bit obsessive once you notice it.

Clues Do Most of the Work

You move around the panorama to gather evidence, then settle on a country and a rough part of it. Scoring works on distance, so a guess in the right country still beats one on the wrong side of the world. Every round tops out at 5,000 points. That number looks generous until you land five thousand kilometers away and watch the bar barely move.

Singleplayer gives you unlimited rounds on the world map or on community maps, and you can set a time limit or play with none. The daily challenge hands everyone the same three locations with sixty seconds per round and one attempt only. Country Guesser and Continent Guesser drop the pin step and ask for a name instead, which is a decent warm up when the map starts feeling like homework.

The developer side is interesting too. One independent developer built it, the code sits on GitHub under a noncommercial license, and the site lists 93 official country maps alongside 73,414 community maps made by players. That library is the reason I keep opening it. Someone has mapped stadiums, capitals, and NFL grounds, and the in-game maker lets you build your own.

WorldGuessr Multiplayer and Party Modes

Online play is where the tension shows up. Ranked duels are 1v1 battles: both players see the same location, the closer guess wins the round and shaves health off the other side until someone drops. Wins move your ELO up through the leagues. There is a 2v2 team version, an unranked match for a quick game, and a private party where you share a link and pick the map and rules with friends. Chat and emotes are in there as well.

Accounts are optional for solo play but required for ranked. That seems fair to me since your rating, streaks, and stats need somewhere to live. The game also ships as an Android and iOS app, runs in five languages, and holds a 4.8 rating on Google Play from 988 ratings. For a one person project, that is not bad at all.

Controls and How to Move Around

The controls depend on where you are playing, but the desktop setup is simple:

Left click and drag to look around the panorama.
Scroll wheel to zoom in on details like plates and signs.
Arrow keys to move the view in steps when your hand needs a break from dragging.
Click the white arrows on the road to travel forward along the street.
Open the small map in the corner and click to drop your pin.
Press the Guess button to lock the pin in and see the distance.

On a phone or tablet the same actions use touch: drag to look, pinch to zoom, tap to move and to place the pin. Nothing is buried in a menu, which keeps rounds short.
