Chasing one fat target into open water usually means swimming into something that sees you as a fat target too, so I hang near clusters of small fish and eat from the edges instead of diving after single bites. Distance is your best defense once a predator commits. Keeping a crowd of smaller fish between you and the hunter buys a second or two, and that is often the difference between escape and a restart. Growing has a cost as well. Every size jump widens the list of creatures that can hunt you, so staying medium for a while is a real option, even when it feels slow. Almost every run I have lost came from one impatient turn toward a big meal, so the calm approach is worth the boredom.
