Play Primary Game Online

Primary is a free online action platformer with puzzle elements that puts you in control of Roy, a super soldier on a mission to climb Prizim tower and close the portal that threatens his world. Programmed by JackSmack with art by FrozenFire and music by SymphonyOfSpecters, and published by Armor Games, this Flash classic from February 2010 remains one of the most creative color based platform games made for the browser. You can play Primary online right on this page, running in full through a modern emulator with no download needed.

What sets Primary apart is its color switching core. Roy can change between red, blue, and yellow forms, and each form has its own abilities that change how you move, fight, and solve puzzles. Levels are built around fast switching between forms, so you constantly read the room, pick the right color, and act in the same breath. It is easy to start and hard to master, which is why it earned medals, badges, and a loyal following across Newgrounds, Kongregate, and Armor Games.

About Primary

The story follows Roy, a super soldier of the land of the HUEman, who must climb to the top of Prizim tower to find a way to close the portal that is letting horrible black goopy creatures into his world. These creatures serve the color eating Void, and only Roy and his color powers stand between them and everything he protects. The tower is full of traps, guards, switches, elevators, and boss rooms that test every skill you learn on the way up.

Primary plays as a single player adventure with a full campaign. You start a New Game from the title screen and your progress is saved, so you can continue later with Load Game. Each stage mixes running, jumping, and climbing with puzzles built around your three color forms. Some paths only open for one color, some enemies only fall to one ability, and some rooms ask you to chain switches, doors, and elevators in the right order. Side goals such as the eighteen Newgrounds medals and the two Kongregate badges reward players who explore every corner and beat every boss.

How to Play Primary

Move Roy with the keyboard, jump across gaps, climb the tower, and switch colors to match each challenge. Red, blue, and yellow forms each grant different powers, from combat moves to stealth style invisibility in the yellow form, so watch the colors of enemies, targets, and level objects for hints about which form to use. When you see a blue target marker in a boss fight, your blue ability is usually the answer the game wants. Elevators and doors respond to switches, and the elevator menu can be driven from the keyboard as soon as the game has saved.

Take your time in the early stages to learn what each color does, because later rooms combine everything at once. If the game ever feels like your keys are sticking, click out of the game window and then back into it, which fixes the issue in most cases. Push forward floor by floor until you reach the top of Prizim tower and face what waits there.

Tips for Primary

Match your color to the room before you move. Enemy colors and target markers tell you which form the designers had in mind, so switching early keeps fights short and safe. Keep the yellow form ready when patrols get thick, since invisibility lets you slip past guards that would be costly to fight head on.
