GeoGuessr is a free geography guessing game you play right in the browser, no download needed. You get dropped into a random street view somewhere on Earth and have to work out where you are, then drop a pin on the world map. Closer pins score more points.

How a Round of Guessing Works

Every round starts the same way. The panorama loads and you have no clue what you are looking at. It could be a highway in Chile, a backstreet in Norway, or a dirt road in Kenya. You spin the camera around, walk a little, and study whatever is in front of you. Signs, license plates, the language on shop windows, road markings, the color of the soil, even which side of the road the cars drive on. All of it is a hint.

The guess itself is simple. Open the map in the corner, zoom into the region you suspect, and left click to drop your pin. Confirm it and the game shows the real spot and the distance between your guess and the truth. Points follow that distance, so landing in the right country feels good and nailing the right street feels ridiculous in the best way. A full game takes you through several locations back to back, and the total builds with every round.

GeoGuessr Modes Worth Knowing

Single player is where most people start, and it is the purest version of the idea. Just you and the map. Multiplayer changes the mood completely. The free web build supports online matches, so you and your friends can race through the same locations and argue about whether that really was Argentina. Small groups get loud fast.

There is a learning effect too, and it sneaks up on you. The game drills world geography without ever feeling like homework, which is probably why teachers keep bringing it into classrooms. A few sessions in, you start recognizing road signs, phone code formats, and architecture at a glance. My geography was rough before this game, and now I can usually get the country at least.

Controls for Desktop and Touch Screens

On a computer the whole thing runs on the mouse. There are no complex key combos to memorize, and the layout is short enough to list in a few lines:

Left click and drag on the panorama to look around.
Scroll wheel to zoom in on details like signs and plates.
Click the arrows or the road ahead to move down the street.
Click the map to place your pin, then hit the confirm button to lock the guess in.

On a phone or tablet the same actions work with touch. Drag with one finger to look around, pinch to zoom, tap the road to move, and tap the map to drop the pin.

The Story Behind the Game

Anton Wallén built the original and released it in May 2013. It runs on HTML5 in any modern browser, so there was nothing to install and nothing heavy to run, which is a big part of why the idea stuck.

The free build on this page is the WorldGuessr version, which keeps the unlimited play going without a subscription. You can play for five minutes on a break or lose an entire evening to it. One more round is a real trap, fair warning.
