Backrooms: Escape Together

Backrooms: Escape Together is a browser horror escape game where you wander yellow-walled corridors, hunt for a way out and stay away from the things that hear you. It is free to play in the browser with no download, so a run can start seconds after the page loads.

The game takes the old internet story about rooms that should not exist and turns it into a place you walk through yourself. Fluorescent lights hum overhead. Damp carpet pulls at every step. Somewhere past the fourth or fifth turn the layout stops making sense, and that is the whole idea. Most of a run is spent listening, counting doors and trying to remember which hallway already tricked you once.

The Rooms You Wander and the Exit You Need

Each run drops you into a maze of office spaces, flickering lights and empty rooms that look almost identical. The goal in the classic setup is easy to say and hard to pull off: keep moving, find a path that does not change behind you and reach an exit before time runs out. That timer scales with difficulty, so a slow and careful walk is a real plan on the easier settings.

It plays in first person, which keeps your view low and close to the walls, and the sound design carries most of the dread. Footsteps, distant knocks and sudden quiet tell you more than a map ever could. Headphones are recommended, and that advice is worth following because audio cues are how you stay alive.

The game arrived in June 2026 and holds an 8.7 rating from 216 votes, a high score for something that is mostly walking and listening. It is an HTML5 build listed for desktop, tablet and mobile browsers.

How a Classic Run Unfolds

You move room by room, lean around corners and back off the moment something shifts in the dark. The entities are called Friends, which is a mean joke, and they do not rush you the second they appear. They drift, lose interest, then come back. Getting spotted is not always fatal, but getting cornered usually is, and a death sends you to the start of the maze.

An explore mode takes the pressure off for anyone who would rather just look around. Nothing hunts you there and the objective is simply to wander. The classic mode keeps the danger in, and the difficulty options change how quickly the game turns on you. Stats even track how often you drown on Nightmare, which says plenty about what the harder setting expects.

A small trophy and stats layer sits on top of all of it. It counts runs played, Friends seen and other milestones, so repeat attempts have something to work toward besides the exit.

Controls for Walking, Looking and Menus

The setup is standard for a desktop horror game, and the game states it in one line before the first run:

  • W and S walk you forward and backward.
  • A and D step left and right. The arrow keys do the same thing if that feels better under your hand.
  • Mouse turns the view. Move it slowly, because one quick flick in a dark hallway is how most runs end early.
  • Left click works the menus, skips the intro and confirms a restart after a death.

Camera sensitivity can be lowered in the settings, and there is a VR option for anyone with a headset. Dropping the sensitivity a notch makes the narrow corridors easier to read.
