Rapid Rally is a browser racing game where you steer a small car around short, twisty tracks, dodge barriers and rival cars, and try to reach the finish without wrecking. It is free to play in the browser, there is nothing to install, and the whole game runs from the keyboard.
How Rapid Rally Plays on the Track
You press the gas and the car goes, which is the easy part. The trouble starts when the road bends. Each track is short enough to finish in well under a minute, but the corners arrive quickly and the walls sit close to the racing line. A clean run feels great. A sloppy one ends with your little car grinding a guardrail and losing everything you picked up on the straight.
What I enjoy most is how fast a failed attempt is over. You are back at the start in a couple of seconds, so trying again never feels like a chore. It is also not a game you can beat by holding the accelerator and hoping. Do that and the first proper corner will introduce you to the barrier.
Why Corners Decide Every Run
Speed only helps when you can carry it through the turn. The layouts lean on tight bends, narrow gaps and the occasional obstacle parked in the middle of the road, so most of the skill is in how you set up a corner. Brake before the bend, steer through the middle of it, then get back on the throttle once the car points where you want to go. Brake halfway through instead and the car slides wide into whatever is waiting on the outside.
On a track I have never seen, I take the opening run slowly and just look at where the ugly corners are before chasing a time. Losing a few seconds there saves plenty later. Tapping the brake briefly also works better than leaning on it, because a car with locked wheels refuses to turn.
Keyboard Controls and What Each Key Does
Everything runs from the keyboard, and the scheme is small enough to learn on a single run.
- W or the up arrow speeds the car up.
- S or the down arrow brakes, and reverses once the car has stopped.
- A or the left arrow steers left.
- D or the right arrow steers right.
Keep one hand on the steering keys and one finger near the brake, since the corners that need both at the same time are the ones that decide your run. Two hands on the keyboard is all the game asks for.
