Phasmophobia is a browser horror game about ghost hunting and evidence gathering. You and your gear walk into a haunted building, hunt for signs of a spirit, and work out which entity is haunting the place before it hunts you. It runs free in your browser, no download needed.
What You Actually Do in Phasmophobia
Every round drops you inside a location that is supposedly haunted, like a family house or an abandoned hospital. You cannot fight what is in there, so the job is purely investigative. Scan rooms, watch for strange readings, and log what you find. EMF spikes, cold spots, fingerprints, ghost writing and spirit orbs are the pieces of the puzzle. Collect enough of them and you can name the ghost type. Miss the signs and the round ends with nothing to show for it.
The pressure comes from not knowing when the spirit decides it has had enough of you. Lights die, doors move on their own, objects get thrown, and sometimes the thing starts a hunt and heads straight for whoever is standing in the wrong hallway. Staying quiet and keeping an eye on the exit matters more than bravery. I like that nothing is marked on a map for you, since tracking the ghost down is half the work.
Ghost Hunting Equipment
Your kit is the whole game. An EMF reader picks up electrical disturbances, a thermometer finds cold rooms, cameras keep watch over places you would rather not stand in, and a spirit box tries to pull answers out of thin air. The journal lists the possible ghost types and the evidence each of them tends to leave, so it works as your cheat sheet during a round.
Setting gear down is simple. Aim at a surface and place the device so it keeps recording while you check another room. The book deserves more attention than most players give it, because it narrows the ghost down as you tick off evidence. Rounds go a lot better once you stop guessing and start comparing notes with the journal.
When a Hunt Starts
Some rounds are quiet enough to feel almost safe, and then one sound flips everything. Footsteps overhead, a door swinging shut, your flashlight dying at the worst moment. If the ghost starts hunting, it moves with purpose and does not care about your plan. Drop what you are doing and get distance, because cornering yourself in a small room is how most investigations end early. This browser version has been online since 2022 and still draws a small crowd of regulars for exactly that kind of round.
It runs on desktop, tablet and mobile browsers, though a keyboard and mouse feel best. The whole thing is an HTML5 build, so it loads quickly and the graphics stay simple enough to run on modest hardware.
Controls and Key Bindings
The setup follows standard first person rules, so it feels familiar within a minute:
- WASD or arrow keys move your investigator around
- Mouse looks around and aims whatever you are carrying
- Left click turns a device on or uses it
- E interacts with doors, switches and objects
- F places a device on the floor or a surface
- I opens and closes the journal
- R drops the device in your hands
- Numpad 1 to 3 switch inventory slots, and Escape pauses the round
