Brush Jjaemu

Brush Jjaemu is a free browser game about brushing a cat, and that really is the whole idea. You hold the mouse button to run the brush through the cat’s fur, let go the instant his expression turns sour, and see how long you can keep the job going. It is a small arcade reflex game you can play right away, with no download and no account.

The setup sounds like a joke. You have been hired to brush Jjaemu, an orange cat who enjoys the attention right up until he does not. Grooming pushes a counter upward while he sits there, and his face slowly telegraphs the mood. Miss the signal and the run ends with a bite. Nothing is hidden and nothing is random, which is exactly what makes the whole thing work.

The Cat Sets the Rules

Every attempt follows the same shape. You press and hold, the brush moves, the number climbs, and the cat decides how long he is willing to tolerate it. His face is the only warning you get. Release too early and you stop making progress. Release too late and you get bitten and sent back to the start. The window between those two outcomes narrows the longer you survive, so a good run turns into a staring contest with a cartoon animal.

Something worth knowing before you start is that the score is not the point. The cat is. New players watch the number and get bitten, then wonder what happened. Watch the cat instead of the counter and the timing starts to feel fair.

Short Runs and a Number That Keeps Climbing

Runs are short by design and the restart is instant, so the loop pulls you back in before you notice. That instant retry rhythm is the best thing here. There are no levels to unlock and no upgrades to grind, just one counter and your own patience. I kept telling myself one more try and lost twenty minutes to it, which probably says more about the game than any score screen could.

Part of the pull is the mismatch between how the game looks and how it plays. It is soft, cute and friendly on the surface, and completely unforgiving underneath. That contrast lands fast, usually on your first bite.

A Tiny Game With a Big Following

Brush Jjaemu was made by artbyeori, an indie developer, and it shipped in April 2026. It is built with Godot and runs as an HTML5 browser game on desktop, tablet and mobile. On itch.io the original release holds a 4.9 out of 5 rating from more than 370 ratings, which is a lot of love for a game about holding a brush still for a few seconds at a time.

The polish shows in the cat himself. He is animated with a pile of small expressions, and that detail is doing real work. Without it, this would just be a timing test with fur.

Controls

Everything runs on a single input.

  • Mouse button held down: brush the cat. Keep holding and the strokes continue.
  • Release the mouse button: stop brushing immediately, which is how you survive.
  • Touch screen: press and hold on the cat to brush, then lift your finger to stop.

That is the entire control scheme. One button, pressed and released at the right moments, and nothing else to learn.
