Baldi’s Basics

Baldi’s Basics is a free browser horror game set in a strange schoolhouse where a smiling teacher hunts you through the halls. You explore the building, answer the math problems in seven notebooks, and try to escape before Baldi catches up. It runs instantly in your browser with no download needed.

The School and Its Strange Cast

This one started as a joke about cheap 90s learning software, and the art leans into that hard. Flat walls, loud colors, smiling characters that feel one small step from a nightmare. Micah McGonigal released it back in March 2018, and it grew into one of the most recognizable indie horror games online. The school is tiny, but every character has a job. The Principal of the Thing scolds you for running or snacking in the halls. Playtime drags you into jump rope games. A bully plants himself in a corridor and demands an item before he moves. They all follow simple rules, which is exactly what makes them dangerous once Baldi joins the chase.

How a Notebook Run Unfolds

Every session starts the same way. You step out of a classroom and the hunt begins. Seven notebooks sit around the school, and each one asks three math questions. Early ones are easy, later ones turn into nonsense with no right answer. A correct answer buys you time. A wrong one makes Baldi faster and louder, and he rarely settles down again. He tracks you by sound, so a slammed door or a sprint down a hallway works like a dinner bell. His friends make it worse, blocking halls, shoving you off course, or forcing you to stand still while Baldi closes in. Collect all seven notebooks, then reach an exit before he does.

Every Control You Need

The whole game runs on a keyboard and a mouse, and none of it is complicated. Here is the short version so you can start moving without guessing.

  • WASD or the arrow keys move your character around the school.
  • Moving the mouse turns your view left and right.
  • Left click opens doors, picks up items, and grabs notebooks.
  • Hold Shift to run, which is quick but loud.
  • Spacebar uses the item you are holding.

Each notebook opens a small pad of numbers when you touch it. Answer the three questions by clicking the numbers on the pad, then get back to moving.

Items That Buy You Seconds

Items are the quiet strategy layer here, and they matter more than they look. A soda can sprays forward and shoves anyone in front of you out of the way. Scissors cut Playtime’s jump rope and end her little game. A key pops a locked door. An alarm clock placed in a hallway pulls Baldi toward the ticking instead of your footsteps. Most of these work once, so every use is a real choice. Spraying a friend feels great until Baldi rounds the corner ten seconds later and you have nothing left. I like to keep the clock until the last stretch and let him wander while I sprint for the doors.

Sound Matters More Than Speed

Running everywhere is the fastest way to lose. It feels good, and it gets you across the map quickly, but Shift sprinting and slamming doors instantly tell Baldi where you are. Walking is slow and boring, and it wins runs. I move in short bursts, ease doors open, and listen for the slap of his ruler on the wall. That sound tells you how close he is and which way he is coming. There is no crouch button, so patience is your only stealth tool. Players who sprint from room to room usually meet him in a hallway within the first minute.
