The Freak Circus

The Freak Circus is a free horror visual novel that runs in your browser, no download needed. You are a café worker who crosses paths with Pierrot, a silent performer from a circus that just rolled into town, and his obsession drags you into a rivalry with Harlequin. Choices steer everything.

Where the Story Starts and Who You Meet

Most of the early scenes happen in painfully normal places, which is exactly what makes the strange parts land. You clock in at the café, you walk home, and somehow Pierrot is always nearby. He barely speaks. He leaves gifts, keeps watch from a distance and treats your attention like something he already owns. Harlequin turns up later with all the charm and none of the warmth, and the two of them make you the prize in a game neither one plans to lose. Garula, the solo developer behind the project, wrote and drew the whole thing, and more story days are still on the way. Five characters appear in the current version.

Choices Decide How the Performers Treat You

This is a reading game with branching choices instead of puzzles or combat. Conversations play out over painted backdrops with animated portraits, and the screen shakes when a scene turns ugly. Every so often a set of replies appears and the story splits, sometimes toward a warm moment and sometimes toward something much worse. The current build has one bad ending and it is not hard to stumble into. A full pass takes roughly half an hour, so the habit worth building is saving before any big conversation and keeping one slot free for experiments. The mouse wheel is your friend too, since rolling back a line saves you when you click faster than you read.

What The Freak Circus Is Like to Play

Horror visual novels tend to live or die on pacing, and this one takes its time on purpose. A scene will hold on a performer’s face a beat longer than is comfortable, the circus music keeps playing like nothing is wrong, and the writing lets silence carry the threat. It is not a jump scare machine. The fear builds from watching the main character lose the ability to simply walk away. The game holds a 4.9 average from more than ten thousand ratings on itch.io, and honestly the art deserves a lot of that. The character designs have a painted, handmade quality that most browser games cannot touch, and the expressions do most of the storytelling.

What the Current Build Includes

The prototype arrived in June 2025, and Day 2 of the story landed on December 3, 2025. Everything runs on Ren’Py, and the game is playable in a browser or as a download for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. English, Brazilian Portuguese and Chinese are all supported, and the store page carries a notice that no generative AI was used in the artwork. This one is strictly for adults. The content warnings list blood, gore, kidnapping and non-consensual drug use, so the 18 plus label is not decoration. The browser version is free, and the downloadable build is name your own price.

Controls for the Browser Version

  • Left click or Spacebar moves the dialogue forward.
  • Mouse wheel up rolls back a line when you read faster than you click.
  • Ctrl held down skips ahead at speed, and releasing it stops the skip.
  • H hides the interface so the artwork fills the whole screen.
  • Right click opens the in-game menu, which also has buttons for Save, Load, Auto and Settings.
  • On a phone, a simple tap does the same job as a left click.

When a set of replies shows up, left click the one you want and the story continues down that path.
